Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching, and we need to make plans. For those of you who don’t already have something in mind, here are a few awesome options for enjoying your three-day weekend.
1. TV Marathons A-Plenty
If you’re feeling like a bit of a homebody this year, Memorial Day weekend always has great marathons on TV. AMC is showing back-to-back classic war movies, Comedy Central is doing a huge South Park marathon, and Spike is running Band of Brothers from start to finish. There’s something for just about everybody if you dig deep enough, including a Golden Girls marathon on We.
2. Go See A Movie
There are a lot of big movies in theatres right now, including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla, and as of Friday, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Being that it’s going to be hot through a huge portion of the country this weekend, it might be nice to get some friends and enjoy the air conditioned goodness of a movie theatre.
3. Have A Barbecue With Friends And Family
It’s a classic for a reason! Usually, Memorial Day falls at just the right time of year to have really good weather, making it a perfect opportunity to get together with friends, drink beers, and barbecue something. Remember to use sunscreen!
4. Hide From People In Your Favorite Café
If you’re just not the barbecuing and great outdoors-y type, the best way to get away from it all is to do what is the exact opposite that everyone else does. Find a Starbucks or some other café in your area that is actually going to be open for the holiday, grab a big book you’ve been meaning to read, and chill with a latte while you read about battling dragons or crazy murder mysteries.
5. Do Something Creative
For people who work regular jobs and yet still want to express themselves creatively, there isn’t a lot of time in the week to devote to your artistic endeavors. If you’re getting a long weekend for Memorial Day, maybe now is the time to knock out a few more pages of that screenplay you’ve been working on, or finish up that half-done painting that’s been eye-balling you from the other side of your bedroom. Make good use of that free time!
6. Hit The Beach
If the weather looks good for the weekend in your neck of the woods, you could do a lot worse than hanging out at the beach. Enjoy the sun, relax, and fall asleep while local children bury you up to your neck. You’ve earned it!
7. Memorial Day Parades
A lot of major cities in the US host parades on Memorial Day, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. If parades are your thing, it’s definitely a good time to go out and take one in. You can always save that barbecue for later in the evening!
8. Take In A Concert
For many cities, Memorial Day weekend is the beginning of the outdoor concert season. Some cities host annual classical music concerts (Washington DC, New York) and others are more known for the rock festivals that start on Memorial Day weekend (Chicago). Whatever kind of music you’re into, you’re definitely going to be able to find something to listen to this weekend.
