For all you iPhone aficionados who love to play retro games from yesteryear, the guys at Cupertino have cut the cord on many of the leading console emulators out there. No more playing those classic Game Boy and Super Nintendo games for iOS 8.1 users, as the loophole that many unofficial emulator apps used has been closed. Of course this was expected at some point, Apple takes a hard line on apps that don’t conform to its guidelines, but for die-hard gamers the iPhone might no longer be their device of choice.
What’s Left for iPhone Gamers Now?
The loophole that was closed was not an elaborate one at all, it was a trick that allowed the date and time to be rolled back on an iOS device and an app to be downloaded via Safari. iOS 8.1 stops this date trick from being used, so now the only other option is to jailbreak your iPhone and use third-party apps stores. That said, Jailbreaking can cause all sorts of software problems and you lose Apple support and incremental software updates. If you haven’t updated to iOS 8.1 yet, then hold off to enjoy your retro games a little bit longer.

A classic platform shoot-em up that was ahead of its time when released, SNK’s Metal Slug was only available on the expensive Neo-Geo console and arcade machine.
